About

iNaturalist – Biodiversity in Smiths Lake

A continuous flora and fauna observation, identification, and education program for local residents and visitors — recording the living things of Smiths Lake.

About

Backyards for Biodiversity aims to increase habitat for our native animals across backyards and green spaces in Smiths Lake. By tracking the species you observe, you can help us see what species are present and how they change over time as we increase native habitat. It is a continuous flora and fauna observation, identification, and education program for local residents and visitors, monitoring and reporting sightings. Both amateur and expert identification support is available — you do not need to be an expert to take part.

What is iNaturalist?

iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. It is a crowdsourced species identification system and recording tool. You can use it to record your own observations, get help with identifications, collaborate with others, and see what has been observed and recorded by others in your area.

Biodiversity in Smiths Lake (and Wallingat)

Our focus begins in the backyards and green spaces of Smiths Lake and reaches out across the wider area, including the Wallingat.  Every observation — a frog, a fungus, a passing bird — adds to a shared picture of what lives here and how it is faring as habitat is restored.

Recent observations and species observed

The project is already rich with sightings — frogs, fungi, lichens, birds, and much more — logged by a growing community of local and visiting observers.  The snapshot above gives a sense of what is being recorded; the live project shows the most recent observations and the species seen most often.
