European settlement in the Smiths Lake area commenced with timber-getting, farming and fishing forming the backbone of community life for generations.
Details
The story of European settlement at Smiths Lake begins in the 1820s. Cedar cutters were the first to push into the district, followed by fishing families and small farmers who shaped the community that grew around the lake's shores over the following century.
For historical photographs, documents and displays of the Great Lakes region, the Great Lakes Museum in Tuncurry is a rich and rewarding resource.
